When we write the cell diagram for the following reaction
2NO3- (aq) + 8H+(aq) + 6Hg(l) --> 3Hg2 2+ (aq) + 2NO(g) + 4H2O(l)

how come the diagram does not include a solid on the anode side?
Hg(l)|Hg2 2+ (aq)||No3-(aq)| H+(aq)|NO(g)|Pt(s)

The diagram does not include a solid in this case because Hg(l) is being used as the electrode on the anode side.

Weird setup, but keep in mind there are exceptions to the rules we are taught. Here is one of them :) doubt we will see this on our exam though as it is almost eerily specific
