Writing half reactions

When writing half reactions can you only reverse the anode when it is required to cancel out electrons?

Usually you are given the reduction half reactions, so you have to reverse the anode in order to get the oxidation half reaction, as you already have the reduction half reaction for the cathode. If you do not know which is the anode and the cathode, then you pick the less positive/more negative reaction to reverse, but sometimes the more negative one will be reversed when you are already given a reaction to follow (this only occurs if a reaction is not spontaneous).
