Anode vs Cathode

Is there a way to determine from two half-reactions which one will be the anode and which will be the cathode? Is it always that the reaction with a more positive E will be the cathode?

It is true that the cathode will be the Ecell that is more positive. You can also to see which part of the reaction is oxidized and which part is reduced to figure out what will be the anode or cathode in the half reactions.

In addition, you want a galvanic cell with a positive E (naught) for the reaction. So after you see the the E (naught) of the two half reactions, you can figure out which reaction will be the reduction and which reaction will be the oxidation.

The anode is the one being oxidized, which means it is losing electrons, while the cathode is being reduced, which means it is gaining electrons.

The anode is the half-reaction being oxidized and the cathode is the half-reaction being reduced.

If given Eº values, you can decide which ones are the cathode and anode if Eº is positive when subtracting them (if you aren't given a cell diagram)
