6L Problems: oxidation and reduction

Postby Siddiq 1E » Sun Mar 01, 2020 4:23 pm

Hi, for the 6L problems that ask you to write the half reactions, how do you know which is being oxidized and which reduced?

To figure out which is the oxidation and which is the reduction reaction,The first step is to figure out the oxidation states of each element in the reactants side and products side (there is a video on Khan Academy on common oxidation state patterns). Then, compare each element's oxidation state from product to reactant side, if an element's oxidation state increased, then it was reduced, so that reactant and product will be the reduction reaction. If an element's oxidation state decreased, then it was oxidized, so that reactant and product will be the oxidation reaction. I hope this helps!

Hi this link is very useful in explaining the steps:

If a species loses electrons, it is oxidized. If it gains electrons it is reduced

Thanks everyone but I actually need help writing it from the cell. I know what oxidation and reduction mean i just can't seem to discern which is which from the cell

For example, 6L. 3 gives just the elements.
