electrodes

Postby 205389184 » Sun Mar 01, 2020 7:43 pm

When an electrolytic cell is missing an electrode, will we always use platinum or does it depend on the other compounds involved?

We always want to use an inert metal such as Platinum because it is not involved in the chemical reaction, only in the transfer of e-.

I think we can use most inert metals. To be safe, I think platinum is most commonly used.

My TA told us we should always use platinum as good practice, but technically any inert metal would function.

Platinum is commonly used and can be a go-to choice in our examples, but any inert metal will suffice.

In practice, I have only ever seen platinum being used as the inert metal in the electrolytic cell, so I just like to play it safe and use that!
