Cell Diagram w/o salt bridge

Postby Elizabeth Bowen 1J » Wed Mar 04, 2020 3:10 am

How would we know which species are on which side of this cell diagram? (it's from an example on page 552)
since this example only has a porous disk, so how would we know if HCl is on the left or right side? Or does it not really matter for writing out the chemical reaction equation for this cell?

Pt(s) I H2(g) I HCl(aq) I Hg2Cl2(s) I Hg(l)

I think for the purpose of the class, he only is focusing on drawing a cell diagram with a salt bridge, but you should know the function and application of a porous disc.
