Pt is added to any side that does not have a solid conductor so whenever you only see (aq) or (g) or no solid conductor, add Pt

Pt is a solid used to conduct the actual processes happening, so it should be added to the side of a cell in which there is only aq solutions, or aq and gas.

Now in cases where you don't need Pt(s) is when you already have a conductive solid metal in the solution.

You use platinum when your half cell reactions don't have a solid metal conductor to transfer the electrons from anode to cathode.

When there isn't a sold metal conductor in the anode or cathode, you need to add Pt(s) to it.
