Concentration cell
What is the main difference between a concentration cell and a galvanic cell in a cell diagram?

Re: Concentration cell
For a concentration cell, the species in the anode and the species in the cathode are the exact same. In a general galvanic cell, they can be different. Hope this helps!

Re: Concentration cell
In a concentration cell, both of your electrodes in your cathode and anode are the same material. The solutions in the cathode and anode are the same. This indicates that your standard cell potential is zero. So a concentration cell is a galvanic cell whose standard reduction potential is zero. In the cell diagram, you would see that the same molecules would be reacting in both the cathode and anode. The solutions in the cathode and anode only differ in concentration.

Re: Concentration cell
To add to the response above, when calculating Ecell for a concentration cell, always make the lower concentration the product for Q. For a general galvanic cell, the standard reduction potential is calculated using the table of reductional potentials. In a concentration cell, the standard reduction potential is 0 but Ecell can still be calculated.

Re: Concentration cell
Concentration cells are basically just galvanic cells, except the anode and cathode are from the same thing, the only difference between the sides is the concentration.

Re: Concentration cell
A concentration cell has the same anode and cathode but the concentrations on either side are different, so in a cell diagram you’d indicate that.

Re: Concentration cell
A concentration cell has the same substance in both the anode and cathode. The only difference is their concentration. A galvanic cell has two different substances.

Re: Concentration cell
A concentration cell has an anode and cathode made up of the same substance whereas in a galvanic cell, the anode and cathode are different substances.
