## Redox from cell diagram

### Redox from cell diagram

In the cell diagram:
$C(gr)|H_{2}(g)|H^{+}(aq)||Cl^{-}(aq)|Cl_{2}(g)|Pt(s)$
H and Cl look like they are both oxidized, how would I write the half redox reactions?

Similarly with $Cu(s)|Cu^{2+}(aq)||Ce^{4+}(aq),Ce^{3+}(aq)|Pt(s)$, how do I view the commas in the diagram to write out a half redox reaction?

Usually the left most species are in the anode reaction and right most in the cathode.

The commas are used just because they the two molecules are in the same phase, but other than that, the molecule is being reduced.

the notation for cell diagrams is (anode) II (cathode), and I've heard some TAs say that on each side it should be written as reactant/product but in reality, there's kind of inconsistencies with the order in which they are written. so just assume that the species on the left are being oxidized and the species on the right are being reduced and write the equations using the species involved appropriately.

the left of the double line is being oxidized while the right is being reduced (you can remember this because of the two r's)
