i believe it is because when you are given two equations and their potential values, it is the standard reduction potential values for both. therefore for the anode cell reaction where oxidation is taking place, you must reverse it to account for the fact that electrons are being lost not gained.
In that case, does that mean cell potentials are calculated first, only using the standard reduction potentials? Like, you calculate cell potential before flipping the equation that is oxidized? Right?
