### 14.51

Hi! This question asks about the cell Ag(s)|Ag+(aq,5.0mmol/L)||Ag+(aq,0.15mol/L)|Ag(s) and whether or not it can do work. I was just wondering, how do you know that $E^{\circ }$=0?

E0 must be zero in this case as the electrodes used on both sides are the same (Ag). The only thing that allows for the flow of electrons in the case of the same electrode would be a difference in concentration. Yet, in the standard case E is calculated when both sides are in standard 1M solution. In turn, there is no electron flow, making E0 = 0.
