### Electromotive Force

What exactly is the electromotive force (emf)? What do we need to know about it in the context of this class, and why does it represent maximum potential difference?

Electromotive force is the cell potential of a system. A higher potential implies that the chemical reaction provides an electric current that is sufficient enough to electrons to transfer. As a result, this means that there is no need for outside input, and the reaction is spontaneous.

From this, we can use the emf to calculate how much work is done by the system, and the maximum nonexpansion work the system can do is based on the maximum electrical potential.
