writing reaction for CO(g)

when writing the reaction for CO(g), how are we supposed to know that it the carbon is in graphite form and not in gas form? is it because carbon is most commonly found in graphite form? I wrote the eq for 4.J.5 at first as

C(g)+.5O(g)--> CO(g)

but go the wrong answer for G bc the S value for C was wrong.

I think this is because carbon is naturally found as graphite which is a solid.
