E is not a state function, but how come we can add to get the E of the redox reactions?

You need to covert E to delta G and then add because delta G is a state function

I think it is different because it's specifically the E of the cathode and anode

I think it's ok to add them in redox reactions because the half reactions are still parts of the same overall redox reaction, as opposed to adding together the E values of two completely separate reactions.

E is not a state function but through Gibb's free energy, which is a state function, can be broken down into multiple steps.
