## Cell Potential Spontaneity

### Cell Potential Spontaneity

What is the relationship of Cell potential and spontaneity?

Can looking at the Gibbs Free energy equation show the relationship since it has Cell potential, and knowing that spontaneity is correlated with Gibbs Free energy.

When the cell potential is positive the reaction is favorable to occur and therefore spontaneous. This can be related to the equation of Delta G = -nfe n cannot be negative and F is positive therefore a positive cell potential will result in a -delta G making the reaction spontaneous.

It is spontaneous when E is positive, which means Gibbs free energy would be negative because when E is positive in delta G=-nFE, delta G will be negative, which once again shows that the reaction is spontaneous.

You have to use the equation ∆G = -nFE. Looking at that relationship, you can see that when E is positive, ∆G is negative, and when E is negative, ∆G is positive. A reaction is spontaneous when ∆G is negative, and thus when E is positive.

When cell potential is positive then the forward reaction is spontaneous. When the cell potential is negative then the forward reaction is nonspontaneous.

To understand this, use the equation Delta G= -n f e. So, when e is positive, the equation will still be negative. Thus, Delta G will be negative and spontaneous.

Responding to an above question, yes it is possible for a cell potential to be negative. That’s why in galvanic cell problems, it is important to make sure it is positive or else it is not a galvanic cell.
