Which cell potential?

Postby Saachi_Kotia_4E » Fri Mar 15, 2019 7:54 pm

When we are arranging different atoms in order of increasing/decreasing strength as reducing agents, how do we know which cell potential to use? some elements have several cell potentials depending on how many electrons are added (for example, Fe+ to Fe has a different cell potential than Fe2+ or Fe3+ to Fe). theres a problem in the book that asks us to arrange Cu, Zn, Cr, and Fe in order of increasing strength as reducing agents. how would you know which cell potential to use when determining the order?

I believe that in the example that you provided you would look at Cu to Cu+ etc. The question should help you determine which one to use. Just like in test 2.
