From what lavelle said and what I understand, the maximum work is equivalent to the maximum cell potential.

Since the cell potential is in units of volts, this can be converted to J/C. Joules is the unit for work, and coulombs is the unit for charge.
Since the battery is doing the work, then the amount of energy that leaves the system is -w
Therefore, cell potential = -(work/charge)
I don't know how Lavelle related the maximum cell potential to the maximum work

Another way Lavelle related work and cell potential was this equation:
w = -nFE
where w = maximum work, n = moles of electrons (which is found in the balanced redox reaction), and E = cell potential of the cell.

Adding on to the people above me, Faraday's constant is the charge on a mole of electrons, so the expression nFE is just the total amount of charge multiplied with the average amount of Joules per charge, which gives work.
