Vant Hoff Equation

Postby AngieGarcia_4F » Sun Feb 23, 2020 10:23 pm

What do we need to know about the Vant Hoff equation? Like will we need to ever calculate it? And what concepts about the equation should we know?

Most of the equations you'd need to know on an exam would be given on the constants/equation sheet, or could be derived from a different equation that is given.

This article explains the Van't Hoff equation in a bit more detail: https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Physical_and_Theoretical_Chemistry_Textbook_Maps/Map%3A_Physical_Chemistry_(McQuarrie_and_Simon)/26%3A_Chemical_Equilibrium/26.07%3A_The_Van't_Hoff_Equation

The Van't Hoff equation relates the change in equilibrium constant (K) and to a change in temperature, given that deltaH and deltaS are constant.

The Vant Hoff equation can also be manipulated and use to calculate K at a different temperature if delta H is known.

Using deltaH, the Van't Hoff equation relates the equilibrium constant, K, to temperature, T.

This equ can also be used a variety of ways. There are multiple variations of the equ that all lead to the right answer.

All of these equations are basically derived from the ones given on the formula sheet, it just depends on which values are constant and which ones you can manipulate.

You should know how to derive it and you can use equations provided on the equation sheet to figure it out. It’s used to find the equilibrium constant (K) when the temperature changes.

Van't Hoff's Equation along with the Nernst Equation we should know how to derive and calculate both.
