### When to apply Pt into cell diagrams

How do you know when to apply Pt(S) as the inert conductor in a cell diagram besides the fact that you have elements in the same phase? Thanks in advance!

You have to include Pt(s) if there is not a conductor (like a solid) in either the anode or cathode. I noticed that in the textbook, when there's Hg(l), Pt (s) is not included. Does anyone know why?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you add Pt when there is no other metal. Since Hg is a metal, you would not need to add Pt.

You would apply Pt into cell diagrams when there is not another solid metal electrode.

Pt is included if their is not a metallic solid in the cell diagram. Hg(l) mercury can also be included but I believe 99% of the time it is a metal solid that is included.

You would use Pt(S) in a cell diagram if there is no other metal present in the reaction that can be used as the conductor.

my TA during discussion says it's always safe to put Pt(s) as the electrode when there is no other metal to act as it

use Pt(s) when there's no metal conductor

You add Pt when there is no metal at the electrode. The only exception to this is for Hg(l) -- you can just put Hg(l) instead.
