Can someone explain why delta g equals 0 when the reaction is at equilibrium?

Because there is no more free energy to do work when the reaction is at equilibrium because the reaction is at the most stable point.

DeltaG is a measure of how much potential a reaction has left to do a net something, so if the reaction is at equilibrium, then no more work can be done and deltaG is 0.

To show why ∆G=0 at equilibrium from a mathematical perspective, use ∆G˚= - RTlnK and ∆G = ∆G˚ + RTlnQ. If we substitute ∆G˚ out, then ∆G = RTlnQ - RTlnK. When the reaction is at equilibrium, the Q=K, thus ∆G = RTlnQ - RTlnK = RTlnK - RTlnK = 0.
