### Values of Standard Electrode Potentials

Why are some standard electrode potentials negative and some positive? What does this mean in relation to the hydrogen electrode?

In regards to the first part of your question, I believe that a negative value for standard electrode potentials indicates that the element or compound in question forms ions easily.

I thought the positive and negative relate to spontaneity. Like if it is positive the reduction is spontaneous.

I believe the poster above me is correct in that it relates to spontaneity of reactions but also sometimes the cell diagram is reversed and the cathode and anode are switched places so I believe the cell potential can also change its value in such a way so you would understand that the reverse reaction can be spontaneous or not .

A negative E values means that the reaction is not spontaneous, while if the E value is positive, then the reaction is spontaneous. You can see this connection through the relation of delta G= -nFE.
