### Degree symbol

What does it mean when you put a degree symbol or knot symbol with delta G or any other variable? What is the difference between that and when the symbol is used for temperature?

### Re: Degree symbol

(knot) just means that the E or Gibbs free energy are at standard conditions. So 25 degrees C, 1 atm, and 1.0 M.

### Re: Degree symbol

The degree symbol indicates that the reaction you are observing was done under standard conditions (298K, 1 bar)

### Re: Degree symbol

The degree symbol indicates standard conditions for the process while without the degrees indicates whatever conditions the reaction is given in.

### Re: Degree symbol

The symbol means standard of reaction, so for example standard reduction potential (E knot) is the voltage difference between two standard electrodes and it is a constant. It is not related to the degrees symbol for temperature

### Re: Degree symbol

When you put a degree/knot symbol with delta G or any other variable, it means the reaction is under standard conditions. When the degree/knot symbol is not present after delta G or any other variable, the reaction is under the conditions given.

### Re: Degree symbol

It means that a given variable or value is present in a reaction that has occurred at standard conditions, say 298 K or 1 atm.

### Re: Degree symbol

The degree symbol means that the variable is the standard variable in that state. The standard value can be considered the default value to use in calculations, like for the standard enthalpy of formation, or the standard entropy of reaction.

### Re: Degree symbol

In things like ΔH° and ΔG°, the degree symbol just means that those are the standard ΔH and ΔG values, aka the values under "standard conditions" (STP = 1.0 atm and 25°C).
It's used for temperature for degrees Celsius/Centigrade (°C) and degrees Fahrenheit (°F).

### Re: Degree symbol

The symbol indicates that the value of the variable is when the variable is at standard conditions, like at 1 ATM or at 298K.
