### Gibbs free energy and balancing redox reactions

Should we check and balance each redox half reaction before trying to calculate gibbs free energy? For example 6L.1: 2 Ce4+ (aq) + 3 I- (aq) $\rightarrow$ 2Ce3+ (aq) + I3- (aq), E cell ° = +1.08 V. Before calculating gibbs, would I need to balance the reaction?

Yes, you must balance each half reaction to determine n, the number of electrons transferred in the reaction.

Yes so you would find the half reactions and balance them to find the least common multiple of their transferred electrons in the final equation. (Usually it's 1 or 2 in the electrons transferred.)
