Standard Cell Potential and K
What does the standard potential of a cell tell us about the value of K. Specifically, how does this relate to the Nernst equation. If a standard value is positive what does that mean for the value of k of a reaction?

Re: Standard Cell Potential and K
A positive standard potential (E) indicates that the reaction is spontaneous in the forward direction at standard conditions and this corresponds to a value of K greater than 1. The Nernst equation allows us to relate K to E and calculate the cell potential under non-standard conditions.

The value of K, positive or negtaive determine the sign of the cell potential as well as if it is a spontaneous reaction or not?

Hi!
E∘ = (RT)/(nF) * ln(K)
If E∘ is positive, that means that the reaction will be spontaneous in the forward direction. To agree with the positive term, K must be > 1, as ln of anything less than 1 will yield a negative number.
