Difference between log Q and ln Q

Postby 705903057 » Mon Mar 18, 2024 11:52 am

On the sheet, two equations seem similar, but one involves "ln Q" while the other involves "log Q." What distinguishes these equations, and how does this difference impact their application?

The natural log (ln) is usually used for rates of change or exponential processes. For example, in the Nernst equation and Gibbs free energy equation, ln is used in order to relate Q to K. the base 10 log (log) is used mostly when finding pH calculations as it is representative of the negative log of hydrogen ion concetration. Although it can be used to express the reaction quotient or eq constant, ln is more commonly used for those processes.
