### oxidizing power vs reducing power

what is reducing power and oxidizing power? How do these relate to Ecell?

oxidizing power is a species' ability to oxidize another species (this inherently means that the species with the oxidizing power is being reduced). reducing power is a species' ability to reduce something else (meaning that the species is being oxidized). Since reduction potential can be thought of as a species' tendency to be reduced, the higher the reduction potential, the more likely something is to be reduced, the greater the oxidizing power (and vice versa for reducing power).

So the reducing agent will have a high oxidizing power, and the oxidizing agent will have a high reducing power.

I may be wrong but I believe the above comment might be inaccurate. The reducing agent has a reducing power because it is reducing another atom and the oxidizing agent has an oxidizing power because it oxidizes another atom. Correct me if I am wrong.
