n and significant figures

Postby Jonathan Pai 2I » Fri Mar 08, 2019 7:50 pm

In electrochemical problems like nernst involving n, the transfer of electrons, does that affect the final answer's signifcant figures, because that would make all the final answers 1 sig fig?

Considering that it would make all of our answers have one sig fig, we would probably use the number that has next least number of sig figs. Also, we know the exact value for n, so it has "unlimited" sig figs in a sense.

How do you determine what n is?

The value of n is determined by the electrons that are canceled out when balancing the redox reaction
