given Ecell

Postby 005199302 » Thu Mar 14, 2019 5:51 pm

If the given Ecell is positive, can we assume its a galvanic cell and the standard Ecell will also be positive? If so, would the same be the case if the given Ecell is negative can I assume that the standard Ecell is negative and the cell is electrolytic?

You can think of it that way, but normally the progression of thought is that galvanic/voltaic cells are spontaneous with positive Ecell, whereas electrolytic cells are nonspontaneous with negative Ecell.

cell is the standard state cell potential, which means that the value was determined under standard states which include a concentration of 1 Molar (mole per liter) and an atmospheric pressure of 1. E cell is the non-standard state cell potential, which means that it is not determined under a concentration of 1 M and pressure of 1 atm. Ecell= Eºcell − (RT/nF)lnQ

If the given Ecell is positive, we can assume IF its a galvanic cell that the standard Ecell will also be positive?
