log and ln in Nernst

Postby Diana_Diep2I » Tue Feb 25, 2020 6:10 pm

When do we use log and when do we use ln when using the Nernst equation? Or does it not matter?

It doesn't matter! Its up to you which one you use but make sure you use the correct conversions for which one you choose (2.303)

They're basically the same thing for the Nerst equation:
E=Eo-(RT/nF)lnQ
E=Eo-(2.303RT/nF)logQ
This is because lnx=2.303logx

It doesn’t matter because Lavelle showed us the conversion from log to ln. But in class he told us that biological sciences are more likely to use the log version, however I don’t think it matters in our case.

I believe he emphasized the log equation just because it is more relevant to life science but yeah I don't think it matters as long as you remember the conversion factor

It doesn't matter, but usually biologists use the log version of the equation

It doesn’t matter which you use but I think in lecture he said that biologist usually use log because pH is calculated using log.

Doesn't really matter. Lavelle only mentioned it since ph is calculated using log so it could be more helpful when you use log in the equation.

Either would work, log is typically used as it is more useful in calculating pH.
