### Reducing Power

Can anyone explain what "reducing power" means?

Reducing power is the ability of a molecule/substance to reduce another. In a redox couple, this would be the reducing agent. When this reducing agent reduces another element, it itself becomes oxidized. Typically, those with a greater reducing power are more likely to donate their electrons to reduce another element, and thus will have the most negative reduction potential (least likely to be reduced themselves). Reducing power is like the ability to give away electrons. A stronger reducing agent with stronger reducing power is more likely to give an electron to another compound.

Reducing power means the ability to give away electrons. If it has a high tendency to give away electrons then it is a good reducing agent and therefore, likely to be oxidized itself.
