Textbook Question 6N.13B

Postby Daniel Hernandez 1G » Thu Mar 11, 2021 8:51 pm

Hi, for part B of question 6N.13 the solution manual says H20 is a part of the oxidation half reaction. Is there some rule that water should not be included in the notation of the galvanic cell? If not, how could we tell that water is included in a half reaction without H20 being given in the problem?

We add H2O in the half reactions, because they are used to balance the reactions. They are not included in the notation, because they are solvents to the aqueous solutions, so it would be unnecessary to include H2O.
