Anode and Cathode

What are the importance of determining the anode and cathode? Is there a trick to remembering which is which if so what is it?

it is important to determine the anode and cathode because when you are writing the galvanic cell, it is easiest to write the diagram flowing from anode to cathode as the book and the solution's manual does it, and theres not really a trick but when you write out the half reactions, the side with the electrons on the left is the cathode and electrons on the right is the anode because anode is oxidation meaning that it would be losing electrons so you have to balance the electrons by adding some on the right and for the cathode is reduction so you add electrons to the left.
