Can someone explain what happens to the electrons during corrosion?

A metal is corroded when it loses electrons (it's oxidized). These electrons are conducted to a cathode, which is then reduced, and gets plated.

When a metal is oxidized and gains electrons, it changes from solid form to aqueous. This change in state corrodes the metal.
