Typo In Reduction Potential of Water (6th Edition)

Postby Kimberly 1H » Mon Mar 11, 2019 10:32 pm

In the homework section for electrolysis, it's given that the reduction of water:
2H2O(l)+2e--->H2(g)+2OH- E=-.42V at pH 7
but in appendix B it lists the reduction potential E=-.83.
Am I missing something or is this a typo?

That reduction value is specific to the pH being 7 and should only be used for the problems that explicitly mention that the pH of the solution is 7. Otherwise you use the appendix Ecell values.
