Sapling Week 7/8 #18

I am really struggling to write the half reactions for the formation of iron oxide for #18 on Sapling week 7/8. The question is:

Iron can form several different oxides, each having its own unique color. Red rust is caused by the formation of iron(III) oxide trihydrate.

Fe2O3∙3H2O

Write the balanced reaction for the formation of Fe2O3∙3H2O(s) . Phases are optional.

Can someone help me start this problem?

Iron rusts in the presence of water and oxygen, so your unbalanced equation should be:

Fe + H2O + O2 -> Fe2O3∙3H2O

Now you can just add coefficients to balance the equation!

One thing that I would say is that once your equation is balanced don't add the parentheses to the hydrate and your answer should go through as correct, I was having that problem. But the previous answer is pretty helpful in how to start it, from there just add in coefficients.

Do you know why the parenthesis are not suppose to be there? I don't really understand how the 2 is a part of the coefficient of H2O on the right side without the parenthesis.

The dot in between the Fe2O3 and 3H2O (Fe2O3∙3H2O) indicates that they form one compound, so the stoichiometric coefficient in front of the iron applies to the entire term. Hope that clears things up:)

Basically for this equation, since Fe2O3∙3H2O is one compound, any coefficient you put in front of Fe2O3 also applies to 3H2O, you don't need any other notation or parenthesis or anything, just #Fe2O3∙3H2O (# being the coefficient).

----coefficients are missing
