Glass pH meter electrode

Postby Mari Williams 1K » Sun Mar 07, 2021 12:53 pm

Why is a pH meter electrode specified as glass? What does that material do for measuring the pH?

I believe glass is used for pH electrodes because the thin glass membrane allowed for selective movement of H+ ions across.

I believe there are also several advantages to using glass specifically for measuring pH. It is very sensitive and also effective to clean and calibrate with buffer solution. The external surface of the electrode also has a hydrated gel glass layer and allows partial penetration of H+ ions.
