States and Collision between Particles

Postby 705984992 » Sun Mar 17, 2024 10:11 pm

I know that increasing the surface area also increases the frequency of collisions, but how does the physical states affect this frequency? Which one, heterogenous vs homogenous, lead to greater collisons?

Collision frequency is greater for homogeneous catalysts.

Catalysts can be homogenous (in the same phase as the reactants) or heterogeneous (a different phase than the reactants). Account for the increase in reaction rate brought about by a catalyst.

Homogenous reactions have greater frequency of collisions. Because all reactants are in the same state, there is a more equal spread of reactants and higher chance of collision. Heterogenous reactions have reactants in different states, meaning an unequal spread of reactants, which would mean collision of reactants happens at a slower rate and are less likely.
