Chemical kinetics is the study of how fast chemical reactions occur and of the factors that affect these rates. The study of reaction rates is closely related to the study of reaction mechanisms, where a reaction mechanism is a theory that explains how a reaction occurs. Reaction mechanism can decide the order of reaction in complex reactions

They help us determine the more efficient elementary reaction orders. However, they can't absolutely prove that a reaction is the most efficient; they can only disprove it.

Reaction mechanisms help to explain the kinetics of complex reactions by providing us a step-by-step explanation of reactants transforming into products. With this we can identify the rate-determining step, and the reaction mechanisms offer insight to kinetics of reactions. We can determine the reaction order and rate constants. By understanding the mechanisms, we can make predictions and manipulate the reaction rate of different conditions.
