Hi, you can tell something is an intermediate when it is formed and then used in a reaction and doesn't appear in the overall reaction. Formations of intermediates are usually the slow step, which determines the rate law so intermediates are essential in solving for the rate laws. Sometimes the rate law can't be determined just by the overal reaction and there are multiple steps to form the product, which involve intermediates.
