Kinetically Stable

What is the difference between being kinetically stable and thermodynamically stable?

Kinetically stable is that there is such a large energy hump that it is unlikely for a reaction to occur by itself. Thermodynamically stable is that the product has a higher energy state than the initial.

Kinetically stable means that the reactants need a lot of activation energy to turn into products. Thermodynamically stable means the reaction is favorable(gibbs free energy would be negative).

Kinetics deals with the rate of a reaction and thermodynamics deals with whether the reaction is favorable or not. Kinetic stability basically occurs when the reactants react at a slower rate. The slower the reaction occurs, the greater the kinetic stability. Thermodynamic stability depends on whether or not the reaction is spontaneous. A thermodynamically stable reaction is one that essentially does not react.
