"N" in Kinetics

What is "N"? What does order of the reactant mean?

The N refers to the order of the reaction. So a first order reaction, where the N is 1, means that the rate of reaction is directly proportional to the concentration of reactants. r = k[A]^1

It's usually a lower-case n, though.

Don't forget that n=1 is usually assumed, so it might not be explicitly said.

The order of a reaction also indicates to what extent the concentration has an effect on the rate, as well as which species has the greatest effect.
