How can we define positional and thermal disorder, and how do we identify which of the two is predominant in a system?

Heating a system results in an increase in thermal disorder. An increase in volume, which allows a substance to spread results in greater positional order. In comparing the contribution of either you have to see if temperature is increasing, volume is increasing, or both and use the change in entropy equations for volume, temperature, or both to see which contributes to a larger entropy change.
