thermo or kinetics?
What is the biggest factor that we should take into account when trying to determine whether thermodynamics or kinetics controls a certain reaction?

Re: thermo or kinetics?
Look at whether it's spontaneous(thermodynamics) and whether the reaction occurs at a fast rate(kinetics).

Re: thermo or kinetics?
Kinetics looks at how the reaction progresses over time whereas thermodynamics looks at the beginning and final energy states of a reaction.

Re: thermo or kinetics?
For kinetics you should be looking at how the reaction is progressing by looking at the rates and the actual pathway of the reaction. For thermodynamics you should be looking at the initial and final rates and making sure you understand the energies involved with both of them.

for kinetics look at how the reaction progress and for thermodynamics look at the initial and final states

Re: thermo or kinetics?
Aren't the thermodynamics and kinetics of a reaction connected though, through the relation between K and both k's? Can a change in one predictably affect the other at all?

Re: thermo or kinetics?
Kinetics focuses on how the reaction progresses over time. Thermodynamics focuses on the the initial and final rates.

they don't control a reaction; instead, they are 2 different ways to think about what a reaction produces, uses, and how it proceeds.

Re: thermo or kinetics?
I think a better mindset to have when considering a reaction is to think that thermodynamic analysis tells us whether the forward or reverse reaction is favored (spontaneous or not spontaneous). However, thermodynamics does not tell us about the pathway, which is where kinetics comes in. From kinetics we can tell the speed or rate of a reaction and look into different mechanisms that factor into different reactions.

Re: thermo or kinetics?
thermo is used to determine how a reaction progressed while thermo is used to look at initial and final states.
