Activation Energy
Why can Activation energy(Ea) replace change in enthalpy(delta H) in the van't hoff equation?

Re: Activation Energy
I think if it is endothermic and enthalpy tells how much energy or heat input is necessary then that is analogous to activation energy.

Re: Activation Energy
Activation energy is not the same as change in enthalpy because change in enthalpy is the difference between products and reactants

Re: Activation Energy
Activation energy is different from the change in enthalpy. Activation energy is the energy necessary to overcome and break the bonds in the reactants of a reaction that occurs and the reactants only. Enthalpy is the total change in heat, including the amount of heat required to break the bonds of the reactants AND the heat released in the formation of the products.

Re: Activation Energy
Activation energy and enthalpy (deltaH) both have the same units of Joules, and one deals with chemical kinetics (Ea) while the other (deltaH) deals with thermodynamics.

Re: Activation Energy
Enthalpy and activation energy are not the same as activation energy dependent on pathway whereas entropy is not.

Re: Activation Energy
Like others have said, they are two different things and thus not interchangeable.

Re: Activation Energy
Activation energy and enthalpy aren't interchangeable. I believe later on in the lectures, we'll see how the two are used together though.

Re: Activation Energy
They are NOT the same thing. Activation energy is the energy barrier you need to overcome for any reaction to happen. Change in enthalpy is the energy gained/released in a reaction.
