Kinetic vs thermodynamics

Postby 205192823 » Sun Mar 15, 2020 7:40 am

I have difficulty understanding how to solve the problem when it uses kinetics vs thermodynamics in the question? How do I solve the problem in both different cases?

You use kinetics when you are observing the speed/rate of a reaction and use thermodynamics to tell if the reaction is favored or not

You shouldn't confuse the two when doing calculations. When a question is asking about thermodynamics and kinetics at the same time it is most likely a conceptual problem that has to do energy profiles.

Kinetics is all about the rate. It involves activation energy, and rate constants, but thermodynamics has to do with Gibbs, entropy, enthalpy, and heat.

Whenever a question is trying to solve for a specific rate or speed, you should apply concepts learned from kinetics. Thermodynamics involves more solving for enthalpy and entropy.

Thermodynamics is not about things moving and changing but instead about how stable they are in one state versus another, while the kinetics is about how quickly or slowly species react. To clarify, thermodynamics describes the overall properties, behavior, and equilibrium composition of a system. Kinetics describes the rate at which a particular process will occur and the pathway by which it will occur.

Thermodynamics tells us if the forward or reverse reaction is favored (based on the sign of delta G), but it does not tell us about how fast the reaction will occur. For example, the forward reaction could be spontaneous/favorable, but it could be a very slow process that takes a long time to occur. Thermodynamics problems will usually ask you to solve for delta G, entropy, the change in internal energy (delta U), etc.

However, kinetics is all about the speed or rate of a reaction. Kinetics problems will usually ask you to determine the rate law, determine the order of a reaction, solve for the rate constant, solve for the half life, etc.

Kinetics is about the speed/rate of a reaction. Thermodynamics is used to figure out the general properties of reactions and includes concepts such as enthalpy and entropy.

Kinetics is for how fast a reaction goes, and thermodynamics is for how favorable a reaction is, how much entropy changes, or how much heat is transferred. Hope this helps!
