order of reaction

Postby Angelina Tran 2F » Sun Mar 17, 2024 9:21 pm

hi, im still a bit confused on determining the order of the reaction and how to determine so, is there a simple way to remember?

When you are asked to figure out the order of the reaction, the question will typically give you some supporting information to help you figure it out.

For example, the question will probably give you a table of experimentally recorded rates and concentrations, and you can use simple algebra to solve for a in the rate law. See below

The Zero order is independent of concentration of the reactants, and doubling this value wouldn't change the rate, so it would be in the 0th order with respect to the reactant

The First order, rate of reaction is directly proportional, so double concentration means double the rate of the reaction.

The Second order would be the square of the reactant concentration, so double the concentration means the reactant would quadruple. Just looking at the chart and playing with the numbers you should be able to distinguish .
