In an electrochemical cell, the anode is where oxidation occurs, resulting in the loss of electrons, while the cathode is where reduction occurs, leading to the gain of electrons. The designation of the anode and cathode depends on the direction of electron flow, with electrons moving from the anode to the cathode.

Oxidation takes place at the anode, where electrons are lost. Reduction takes place at the cathode, where electrons are gained. Each electrode's polarity is determined by the direction in which electrons flow from the anode to the cathode.

HI in the anode the oxidizing reaction occurs while in the cathode the reduction reaction occurs.
