Gas Product

We were given the reaction NH4+ (aq) + NO2- (aq) --> N2 (g) + 2H2O (l) in class, and told that since N2 is a gas it leaves the solution and the reverse reaction is less likely. Why is the reverse reaction less likely?

If the gas leaves the solution, it is no longer available to react with the other product (H20) to form the reactant. Therefore, the reverse reaction is less likely.

Because when the N2 leaves there would be less N2 in the system and the reaction would shift to the forward reaction to produce more N2 so reverse reaction is less likely.

Another way to think of it is that N2 leaving the solution as a gas reduces the amount of reactant available for the reverse reaction. N2 is acting as a limiting reactant here, so the H2O does not have enough available N2 to react with in order to form more NO2 and NH4. Hope this helps
