Reaction rates

Postby Jacquelyn Hill 1 » Wed Mar 07, 2018 12:09 am

What is the difference between the average rate over a certain period of time and the unique average rate?

The average rate of a reaction is the change in concentration of a species over some time. The unique average rate is just said average rate divided by the stoichiometric coefficient of the species being monitored.

The unique average rate can be applied to any of the molecules in the reaction by multiplying it by the coefficient in front of the molecule, if that helps!

Average rate is different based on which species you choose because it is dependent on the concentrations and that may change over time. Unique rate is the appearance or disappearance of a species divided by its stoichiometric coefficient so it will be the same for each reactant/product. Average rates don't take coefficients into account so it can be different from the unique rate.
