Derivatives

Postby AlyssaBei_1F » Mon Mar 04, 2019 12:26 pm

In lecture today, many equations involved integrals and derivatives. Do we need to know how to solve with integrals and derivatives for the kinetics section?

The integrated rate laws will be given to you. You will need to memorize which one is the first order rate law, which is second order, etc, unless you know how to derive them.

I don't think you need to memorize how to derive the equations, he just shows them to us to explain how we get from each formula to the next to help us comprehend!

So far, the only calculus-type material that we've covered is that integrating the rate law gives you an equation in terms of time rather than concentration. That and the simple fact that the derivative of 1/x is lnx. If you know these things along with the idea that a derivative is the instantaneous rate of change, you should be good.

I think like the section on thermodynamics, knowing how to derive the equations makes it easier if you get stuck on a problem, but I dont think we have to memorize them as long as we know what to use in what situation

I wouldn't say you need to know how to do integrals and derivatives but just understanding how these equations derive would be helpful
